How BAH works

The Basic Allowance for Housing is set for each military housing area from local rents and utilities for typical homes. Your rate depends on three things: the ZIP code of your duty station (not where you live), your pay grade, and whether you have at least one dependent. It is paid every month, tax-free, unless you live in government housing.

Rates change every January 1. If your area's rate goes down, rate protection keeps your current amount for as long as you stay at the same station with the same dependency status. Areas not inside a named housing area use a county cost group rate, which the lookup above shows too.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill housing allowance uses the E-5 with-dependents rate for the ZIP code of your school, which is why the lookup shows it for every ZIP code.
